A wallet pass is a card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. When it carries a QR code, it becomes a code you can pull up in a few taps and hold out for someone else to scan: your contact details, your guest Wi-Fi, the page where customers leave a review. A business can also send passes to its customers, one per person, as member cards or referral cards. Below are eight wallet pass ideas, what each one needs, and the limits to know before you build them in CodeQR.

What is a wallet pass?

A wallet pass is a digital card stored in the phone's wallet app, next to boarding passes and loyalty cards. Google's Wallet API reference lists the pass types Google Wallet supports: event tickets, boarding passes, gift cards, loyalty passes, offers, transit passes and a generic pass (read on October 28, 2026).

Many passes carry a barcode or QR code. An airline or a stadium scans it with its own system to check you in. A pass made from a QR code in CodeQR is simpler. It holds the same code you would print, so whoever scans it gets what the code contains: a web page, a contact card or Wi-Fi details.

Who scans a wallet QR code

A phone can't scan its own screen. A QR code in your wallet is something you show, and someone else scans it with their phone. Every idea below works that way.

A CodeQR pass also doesn't check people in or validate entry the way an airline or concert ticket does. Scanning it opens whatever the code opens, for anyone who scans it.

1. Carry your business card in your wallet

With your contact details in a wallet pass, anyone you meet can scan it and save you to their contacts, and you don't need paper cards at an event.

You can build it two ways. A Business Card code puts your details in the code itself. If that code is static, your details are written into the pass, and changing them means saving a new pass. A dynamic URL code that opens a digital business card page with a Save contact button lets you edit the page later, and every saved pass opens the new version.

2. Give your whole team wallet business cards

For a sales team or event staff, create one code per person, for example by importing them from a CSV file, and send each person the link to their own pass. Through the CodeQR API, each pass can also carry a line of text under the code, up to 40 characters, such as the person's name.

3. Show guests your Wi-Fi

Keep your guest network as a pass on the phone at the front desk or reception. Guests scan it and join without typing the password. The network name and password are stored in the code itself, so when you change the password, create a new code and save its pass again. Create a Wi-Fi QR code for guests covers the code.

4. Ask for reviews at the counter

A pass that opens your review page lets staff ask for a review when a customer is happy, from the phone already in their pocket. Use a dynamic URL code, so you can point it at a different review site later without touching the saved passes. See QR codes for Google reviews for ideas on the page itself.

5. Collect sign-ups at an event or booth

Show a pass that opens your newsletter sign-up or contact form. Business, the plan wallet passes need, also includes a form before the redirect, so each scan can become a lead before the visitor reaches your page.

6. Send people to your app or booking page

A salesperson or the person at the front desk can show one pass that opens your booking calendar, a payment page or your app. With app store routing, iPhone users go to the App Store and Android users to Google Play from the same code.

7. Member cards that open a member page

Give each member a pass with their own code. When staff scan it, it opens the page you chose for that member, such as their perks or their membership details. Create one code per member from a CSV file, send each member the link to their pass, and use the API to print the member's name or number under the code.

CodeQR doesn't keep points, stamps or balances. The pass identifies the member by opening their page; any points program runs in the tool that page belongs to.

8. Referral passes

Give each customer a pass with their own referral code. They show it to a friend, the friend scans and lands on your sign-up page, and the scan is counted on that customer's code in Analytics, so you can see whose referrals bring visitors.

Before you build a wallet pass in CodeQR

  • Wallet passes are on the Business plan and above. They aren't available during a trial and unlock when you complete checkout. See pricing.
  • They work with URL, Business Card, Email, Phone, Wi-Fi and Text codes. WhatsApp codes don't get a pass.
  • The pass shows your workspace name and logo at the top and the code's title. Apple Wallet passes use a fixed style; Google Wallet passes take the QR code's background color.
  • On a dynamic code, the pass holds the short link. Change the destination and every saved pass opens the new one. Scans from the wallet count in Analytics like any other scan of that code, so they're mixed with scans of the printed version. If you need wallet scans on their own, give the pass its own code.
  • On a static code, the content is written into the pass, and its scans are never counted.
  • A new title, name or logo reaches only passes saved after the change.
  • Passes don't pop up by location or time, and they don't send notifications.
  • Archiving a code marks the passes saved in Google Wallet as expired. Passes in Apple Wallet stay on the phone.

How to send a wallet pass to your customers

In the QR code's preview, Copy public link gives you the address of the code's pass page. Add /add to the end, and the link opens Apple Wallet on an iPhone and Google Wallet on Android. Other browsers, including in-app browsers like Instagram's, get the pass page with both wallet buttons. Put the link in an order confirmation email or on a button on your site.

On an iPhone, Wallet is built in. On Android, the pass is saved to Google Wallet on the customer's Google account. Add a QR code to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet has every step, and the Apple Wallet and Google Wallet guides go through each wallet. For an overview of the feature, see wallet passes.
