QR codes that call or write to you

Put your phone number or your email behind a QR code, with the subject already written, and know what the phone actually does when it reads one.

Two types for the same job: making it easy to reach you. One offers to dial, the other opens a new email with the subject already filled in.

Availability

  • Plan: every plan.
  • Where: QR Codes → Create QR Code → Phone or Email.

Create a phone code

  1. Open QR Codes and select Create QR Code.
  2. Choose Static or Dynamic and select Continue.
  3. Under Select QR Type, choose Phone.
  4. Fill in Phone number, in full: country code, area code, number.
  5. Add SMS message turns it into a text message instead of a call, with the message already written.
  6. Give it a Title, then select Create QR.

Create an email code

Same path, choosing Email, then:

  • Email — the address that receives it.
  • Subject — fill this in. It is the field that makes the code worth using: "Quote request — front window" tells you where the message came from before you read a word of it.
  • Message — an opening line, if you want one.
  • Add Cc recipients and Add Bcc recipients open extra fields, for a shared inbox.

What the phone does when it reads one

Be precise about this, because it is where expectations break.

A static code carries tel: or mailto: inside the image. The phone reads it and offers to call or to open the mail app directly. It happens instantly and needs no connection.

A dynamic code opens a CodeQR page first. The page shows the number or the address with a button to act on it, so it takes one extra tap — and in exchange the number stays editable after printing and every scan is counted.

The editor offers a choice about this on dynamic codes. Today the display page is what gets served either way, so plan for the extra tap.

Verify it works

Scan with a phone that is not yours. A phone code should offer to dial the full number, area code included. An email code should open a new message to the right address with your subject in place. Send it to yourself once and confirm it arrives with the subject you wrote.

Troubleshooting

The number is stored exactly as you typed it. Write it in full international form so it dials from any network.
